Tyra Banks was born in Los Angeles, California. At the age of 17, when she was planning on attending Loyola Marymount University, the Elite agency signed her as a model. Tyra has since become a world-renowned supermodel, and is a pioneer in the industry. She was the first African-American woman to grace the covers of GQ, Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue and the Victoria's Secret catalog. In addition, Banks has been contracted by Swatch and Cover Girl, and has appeared in ad campaigns for Nike, Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana.
Tyra began her television career with recurring roles in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Felicity. She also has appeared in several films, including; Life Size, Higher Learning, and Coyote Ugly. She has also authored the book, Tyra's Beauty Inside & Out. She is the creator and executive producer of the popular show, America's Top Model.
Tyra founded the non-profit organization, Tzone, an annual week long summer camp experience for teenage girls designed to enhance independence and self-esteem. In addition, she has established The Tyra Banks Scholarship, a fund that grants African-American girls the opportunity to attend her alma mater, Immaculate Heart High School, an all-girls private school in Los Angeles.
She has a love for children, animals and the environment. She also feels very strong about a good education. And that's what makes her stand out as a good role model and a true beauty, inside and out.
